Therapeutic Applications in Yoga & Meditation

AHYMSA (Alliance of Himalayan Yoga and Meditation Science and Applications) in collaboration with HSNEF (Hindu Society of Northeast Florida) is offering continuous classes in "Therapeutic Applications in Yoga and Meditation" from the series of Steps to Advanced Meditation.

These classes are progressively deepening in both theory and practical application in ancient systems of Himalayan Astanga Yoga (also known as Vaidik yoga, Rishi Yoga or Gyana-Vijnana Yoga) The expected outcome is a deeper awareness related to health and rejuvenation and longevity and a program for self awareness, self transformation towards self-realization.

As a matter of progression, each lesson builds on the previous lesson. Mastery of simpler exercises enables the student to move to deeper, more inclusive techniques and leaving off simpler ones (the training wheels in a sense).

These classes are taught by Yogarishi Deolal Mahabir, qualified master of yoga and meditation who has been practicing and studying yoga and meditation since childhood and began teaching yoga in 1972 at the age of 12. He had not known a life outside of yoga. He studied under Dr. Swami Gitananda for 12 years before being initiated into the Himalayan tradition by Dr. Sri Swami Rama of the Himalayas of whom he is a direct disciple.

He is an accomplished meditator, a yoga therapist and yoga psychotherapist practicing both Eastern and Oriental systems of medicine and western traditional therapies. As a practitioner, therapist and teacher Yogarishi has treated many pre-diagnosed and undiagnosed conditions by yogic methods. He is the developer of "Micromovement Rejuvenation Exercises" and creator of "Yoga Neuro-reflexology," both of which anyone at any level can learn and administer to themselves.

There are several levels in this series. The course material in these classes and additional training in the Himalayan Yoga tradition can be used by students and professional medical practitioners, counselors and therapists in a professional manner, who can use it in their professional practice. Students may wish to study further and become certified instructors and counselors; that can be facilitated.

More information is available at www.mindexplorer.com on Yoga Teachers Training, Meditation Teachers Training, and Yoga Neuro-Reflexology.

Current classes are being held at the Hindu Society of Northeast Florida (HSNEF) on Tuesday nights, 7:15 to 8:30 pm.

The next session series class shall be on September 16th . Registrations are currently being accepted for the same.

Yin Yoga

Yin Yoga Workshop with Joan Ryan, E-RYT 500

"Come enjoy the magic of Yin Yoga your body will feel like it never has before!"
-from the Yoga Ananda website

Kundalini in Jax, TT Too

Kundalini Yoga is amazing, unlike any other yoga you are probably familiar with. It invigorates me like nothing else and leaves me feeling strong and powerful, like I could conquer anything with just a lift of my little finger. The class is broken up into sets known as kriyas, often with quick and repetitive movements that will push you to the edge and show you the light!

I took a quick look at Gurudass Kaur's website, and it looks like she will be joining us in Jax between stops in Colombia and Italy. What a pitstop. Good for us, as it gives us a rare chance to practice Kundalini. Her specialty training for teachers and parents, Childplay Yoga, will also be featured during the weekend. All events take place at Yoga Ananda in Avondale.

Friday, September 19, 5:30-6:45 pm, Kundalini Yoga open class, $14.
and following at 7-8:15 pm, Mantras in Motion Kirtan, $15.

WEAR WHITE! I recently attended a workshop with Gurmukh Kaur Khalsa, and I was sticking out quite prominently in my black and green outfit.

Mantras with mudras is the healing science of today and tomorrow. This practice uses choreographed hand and body movements to express the essence of the mantras that are being chanted. Mantras in Motion invites viewers to experience the transformative effects of healing mantras coupled with powerful mudras.

Childplay Yoga Teacher Training
Saturday & Sunday, September 20 & 21, 9 am-7 pm both days, $275 before 8/15 and $300 after 8/15.

This 16 hr. in-depth training program is geared to anyone interested in offering creative, fun and empowering yoga oriented classes for children aged 3-12, teens and groups of adults. With the Childplay Yoga Program children play at yoga to become more balanced physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. It provides the opportunity to enhance their coordination, balance, flexibility, group skills, sense of humor, self-esteem, concentration and to work out excess energy in a positive uplifting environment.

Relax, it's Yoga Nidra

Yoga Nidra with Lisa Long
Mindful Motion Yoga
Sunday, August 17 2:30 - 4:00 p.m. $20

Yoga Nidra is a state of complete physical, mental, and emotional relaxation. It has been touted as the most powerful relaxation technique known to man. Yoga Nidra effectively works on mental resolve, will power, and resolutions. Many people - from new practitioners to world-class athletes, testify to the unbelievable power and effectiveness of the personal resolution, called a Sankalpa, made during the practice.

Please register early. Space is limited. Registration forms available in the studio or click here to download.

Instructor Lisa Long has this to say on her website:

Give yourself a wonderful gift!

The first 30-minutes of the Yoga Nidra experience will include a very gentle physical practice with stretches that prepare the body to lay still for the following 40-minutes. While lying on the back, participants are then cued to levels of awareness, going deep inside until reaching a state between sleeping and waking. You are profoundly relaxed, but retain a trace of awareness. Yoga Nidra itself is not sleep. It can best be described as “Sleep of Awareness”

The power of this therapeutic technique, if practiced regularly, can help manage stress, insomnia, and mental/physical pain, clearing away old patterns of thinking and behaving that are no longer a benefit to well-being.

If you are interested, please register early. Yoga Nidra usually fills 2 weeks prior to the experience.

Survey for Mandy's New Yoga Classes

I have decided to begin offering group classes once again at a beautiful space in the University/Atlantic area.

After owning a studio and handling class scheduling, if I have learned anything it is to receive student input on their preferences for class times, style of yoga, etc. before firming things up.

So I kindly ask you to answer these questions so I can consider the needs of the students and make the best choices in what will be offered. I do not yet have a date set for when classes to start, but look for an announcement in the very near future!

If you prefer, you can also access this survey by clicking this link and it will appear as a new page.

Radiant Child Teacher Training & Children's Yoga

The following is from Melissa Johnson, owner & director of Yoga Ananda Yoga & Wellness Center in Avondale. I am just the messenger! All replies to this announcement should be directed to: Victoria@YogaAnandaStudio.com.

Dear Yoga Family:

Do you need a light-hearted, fun, spiritual yoga experience? Are you interested in giving the gift of yoga to children? This course is perfect for you! And it is coming to FL!

RADIANT CHILD YOGA PROGRAM LEVELS I (flyer attached) will be held at our center May 23rd – 24th. This certificate training program is for school teachers, parents, therapists, day-care workers, yoga teachers, and others interested in learning to GIVE CHILDREN THE GIFT OF YOGA. This program has counted towards PUBLIC SCHOOL CEU’S and also can be applied to continuing education for the Yoga Alliance.

This program was created by Shakta Kaur Khalsa, famous yoga teacher and author (Fly Like Butterfly), and former Montessori school teacher. She ran a Montessori school in Baltimore, MD, and the program grew out of that school, and now over 3,000 people around the world are trained in the tools and techniques of yoga for children. We have found that yoga helps kids focus, relax, builds confidence, and integrates both hemispheres of the brain. It is the only non-competitive physical activity many children do, and in that context teaches them self-respect, respect for each other, how to think intuitively and how to relax.

The course will include special sections on how to incorporate yoga into the classroom, and how to use yoga to support children with special needs, like DSI. ADD, ADHD, etc. Saturday afternoon includes a Kids Yoga class (flyer attached) for children and their parents from 3PM – 4PM at a special discounted rate of $8/child!

Could you please share this information with your friends, clients, teachers and any parents who may want to attend, or bring their children to class to experience yoga's benefits? We greatly appreciate your support.

Location: Yoga Ananda Studio, 4150 & 4154 Herschel Street, Jacksonville, 32210

Level 1: Fri 5/23 time: 5pm-9pm, Sat 5/24 time: 12pm-6pm.

Facilitator: Cristin Tighe (Simran Kaur) of Spiral Flight Yoga, Washington, DC

Tuition: $200 if enrolled by 5/16 or $225 if enrolled after 5/16

Please feel free to pass along this information to anyone who might find it useful.

IMPORTANT NOTICE:

Shakta Kaur Khalsa, creator of the Radiant Child Yoga Program has just informed us that the RCYP program will undergo some major changes in 2008. It will no longer be offered as Level 1 and 2, but rather as a Complete Weekend Course. As a result the course price will increase substantially.

Hence it is a unique opportunity to take advantage of October 2007 Training, as it is one of the last courses being offered this year. The price for RCYP Levels 1 & 2 is usually $475, which significantly lower than other similar Children’s Yoga training courses.

From Melissa Johnson, owner & director of Yoga Ananda in Avondale:

Kundalini Yoga is coming to Jacksonville for 1 day only! Join us in this rare experience to learn about this style of Yoga (there are no Kundalini classes in this area that we have found)!

KUNDALINI YOGA: An Introduction with Simran (Cristin Tighe)

Class includes an introduction to Kundalini Yoga, Kundalini yoga set, and meditation with chanting and deep relaxation.

This class is open to beginners and experienced yoga practitioners alike!

Day: Sunday, May 25th
Time: 1:00PM – 4:00PM
Cost: $40 before 5/23 :: $50 after 5/23
Location: Yoga Ananda 4150 Herschel Street, Jacksonville, FL 32210

What is Kundalini Yoga? Kundalini Yoga, the Yoga of Awareness, was brought to the West by Yogi Bhajan in 1968. Yogi Bhajan taught that, through the practice of Kundalini Yoga and meditation, your glandular and nervous systems are stimulated, and your capacity for creative potential is heightened. You gain inner vitality to compensate for the adverse effects of stress so you can excel in life. Find more information about Kundalini Yoga in this article.

"Kundalini yoga classes are a dynamic blend of postures, pranayam, mantra, music and meditation, which teach you the art of relaxation, self-healing and elevation. Balancing body and mind enables you to experience the clarity and beauty of your soul. No previous experience in yoga is required for you to achieve results with your very first class. Men of great knowledge actually found out about the chakras – their workings, their petals, their sounds, their infinity, their co-relationship, their powers. They found that the life of a human is totally based on these chakras. This total science gave birth to Kundalini Yoga."

Satsang Across America

If you are a satsang devotee, here is an interesting event being planned for a North America-wide non-stop chanting of the Maha Mantra for a period of 24 hours (known as the Vishnu Sahasranama). The Hindu Society of Northeast Florida is hosting a Florida Satsang in preparation.

A new organization is starting this year to coordinate the Vishnu Sahasranama chanting across US and Canada in one Satsang. In this respect, please see the attachment for the details of the Akhanda Vishnu Sahasranama (AVS) Organization and the planned satsang across US and Canada on Saturday morning, October 4, 2008.

To prepare for the annual AVS event, we planned to have a Florida Satsang of 1008 Vishnu Sahasranamams on June 14, 2008, Saturday at 10:30AM. For this, your group will assemble at your temple or community hall. This will help us to understand the communication and coordination problems between different groups in different temples and cities in Florida. Further, for the first time, we will find the
number of people across Florida who is interested in the Vishnu Sahasranama satsang.

If you are interested in either participating or co-ordinating this event, please send an email to vpworship_hsnef@yahoo.com or please call 472-9892 ASAP as we need to provide a headcount.

What's Your Dosha?

According to Ayurvedic principles, there are three dosha types: kapha, pitta, and vata. The doshas correspond to the elements. Vata is air, pitta is fire and water, and kapha is earth and water. Most of us are dominated by 1 or (more often) 2 doshas though the ultimate goal is to balance all three in perfect harmony through lifestyle choices such as diet, exercise, and meditation. To find out what your dosha type is, here is a fun little quiz offered by the Ayurveda Health Retreat in Alachua, Florida, a cute little town about 10 miles north of Gainesville. (I'm a pitta by the way with a little bit of vata thrown in.)

Worldwide Kundalini

Join countless yogis this Sunday morning for a "trial" exploration in awakening Prana Shakti (the energy that drives the universe).

India, from time immemorial, has considered our world
as one nation, with Prana Shakti/Universal Life Energy
as the common basis for all human beings. P. P.
Narayankaka Maharaj intends to demonstrate our
Universal Brotherhood through this Global Trial of
Mahayoga Shaktipat.

P. P. Shri Narayankaka Dhekane Maharaj (Kaka Maharaj)
is a leading teacher and proponent of Mahayoga
(Siddhayoga) , a centuries-old tradition of
spiritualism and Yoga that guides its followers to
spiritual self-realization, while continuing to live
productive lives in society. He is the only living
disciple of P. P. Shri Loknath Tirth Swami Maharaj,
who initiated other leading 20th century luminaries of
Siddha Yoga, including P. P. Shri Gulvani Maharaj.

Param Pujya Shri Narayankaka Dhekane Maharaj would
like to invite everyone on this earth to participate
in a Global Introductory Trial of Mahayoga Shaktipat
(Siddhayoga) for the uplift of all humankind. This
introductory trial will be held on February 10th,
2008, from 6:11 am to 6:32 am local time. Those
interested can participate during that time at no cost
from the privacy of their own homes. All are eligible
to participate in this trial regardless of religion,
race, sex, age, caste or creed. This world-wide trial
can be considered to be a "trailer" or a precursor for
the awakening of one's Kundalini Shakti (Universal
Life Energy) through Shaktipat (transfer of Energy)
from a Siddha Yoga Master. It is a rare opportunity
to experience first-hand such a transmission of Energy
from a Siddha Guru.

Here's how to participate:

At the designated time (February 10th, 2008 from 6:11
am to 6:32 am local time) sit comfortably with your
eyes closed in a quiet location in your home.
Instantly observe a wave of energy along your spinal
column.
Relax your body completely in order to minimize the
awareness of your body.
Let your mind observe your involuntary breathing. Observe your experiences during the designated time interval and please report them by e-mail to P. P. Narayankaka Maharaj at (mahayoga_kaka@yahoo.com).

Happy New Year

And although I feel time is this flowing entity that we can not contain, nor even try to divide up into these things we call days, weeks, months, years...but our minds need these symbolic events, such as the turn of a new year. And the sense of hope and the belief of a clean slate.

However since finding yoga, I am impressed with an awareness that each passing second is the same opportunity. And not getting hung up on just one chance, every January 1, to make things "better" or "right" in my life. That chance is there always. So at the very least, I find solice in that and keep on breathing. Yet I make those resolutions every year anyway!
